Why this matters

Neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Developmental Coordination Disorder affect 10–15% of the global population. These are not rare conditions — they are genetic, lifelong, and too often misunderstood or missed, especially for women, girls, and underserved communities.

The impact of being unsupported:
Left without recognition and support, neurodivergent people face greater risks of mental health challenges, school dropout, workplace exclusion, substance abuse, and social isolation. In South Africa alone, an estimated 70–75% of youth in correctional facilities have undiagnosed neurodevelopmental conditions; a staggering, preventable failure of early detection and systemic support.

The crisis is also informational.

Decades of research are yielding more accurate, evidence‑based insights and tools. Yet there’s a widening gap between what science now knows and what the public can safely access and understand. This creates an information crisis with three challenges:

1 – Availability of safe, up‑to‑date, evidence‑based knowledge.

2 – Awareness across ages, cultures, and communities.

3 – Accessible delivery — practical, contextualised, and emotionally safe, especially where resources are limited or stigma is high.

Bridging this gap matters — so people can recognise, understand, and affirm neurodivergent identities with dignity, accuracy, and support.
